Beautiful Hair While You Sleep

Don’t you wish that you can roll out of bed with your hair looking just as great as it did yesterday? Sometimes I wake up and my hair looks awesome with no kinks of any kind. Sometimes I wake up and my hair looks like a cyclone hit it. Over the years I’ve adapted a few tricks in order to wake up with hair looking great so I don’t have to spend my time fixing my hair in the morning. Besides, I’d rather get more sleep than fix my hair. Here are my tricks to have beautiful hair while you sleep.

A scrunchie is your best friend. I’m not talking about the scrunchie that you’re wearing on your wrist right now. I’m talking about the big 80’s style scrunchie you used to wear back in the day. The best thing about the scrunchie is that it won’t rip your hair out or cause it to crease. Before bed, put your hair in the highest ponytail possible and secure with a scrunchie. You will wake up with your hair un-creased and with some volume as well!

Create beautiful waves while you sleep. Before bed, braid your hair in one giant braid and secure with a hair tie. Spray the braid with a little bit of hair spray. The next morning, take out the braid and you will have beautiful, effortless waves. I like to do this when my hair is dirty.

When I wash my hair at night, I let it air dry naturally while I sleep. I find that when I wake up in the morning it’s a little damp so I can easily style it.

Drug Store Beauty Find of the Week

I bought this moisturizing facial wash by Simple Skincare for my trip to Miami. It was also recommended by beauty banter. I needed something that would take off all my makeup but wouldn’t dry me out (my skin gets super dry from the sun).

I freakin love this stuff! It’s gentle, effective, and has a light scent that isn’t too over powering. It actually reminds me of an updated version of CeraVe which my dermatologist recommends over Cetaphil. For $8 I have some great face wash with me on my trip- J really likes it too! It also foams up really well for those of you who own a clarisonic.

Current Obsessions

The above items are what I currently use or wear daily. I can’t live without my clarisonic, it has completely changed the texture of my skin and I’ve been breaking out a lot less. Totally worth the investment especially since you won’t need to take trips to the dermatologist as frequently or purchase expensive products that don’t work. What are you currently obsessed with?

Weekend Things

I apologize for being a terrible blogger- I’ve been getting work done on my site and I didn’t want to touch anything and mess it up! My blog is really annoying to navigate through right now, so please excuse the mess. This past weekend was a lot of fun. I attended my cousin’s wedding shower, celebrated a birthday, an engagement, and had friends in town. I was crazy busy!

New Summer Finds

How was everyone’s 4th of July? I saw the fireworks last night on my friends rooftop. This pic the best one I got even though it’s blurry. Chicago put on a great fireworks show, the heart shaped ones were my favorite!

I’m getting ready to leave for NYC soon- I can’t wait to see all of my friends. It’s been so long! I did a little shopping before my trip and found these affordable fashion and beauty items.

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm.

This is what it looks like on me- I love that it has the balm on one side and the lipstain on the other.

 Revlon Just Bitten Kissable

This stuff is amazing! The color lasts for hours and it’s very moisturizing. It’s pretty much a giant crayon for your lips- what could be better than that?!

Almay makeup eraser sticks

I throw these in my purse. They are great for touch ups!

My friend Marnie had these sandals and I had to get them. I also bought them in black. They are $16 at Target.

Scored this swim suit at Target yesterday- $33. I can’t wait to wear it in Fire Island.

Have a great weekend!

How To: Make Beachy Waves

I’ve had a ton of people asking me about the waves I’ve been wearing in my hair recently. I used to curl my hair with a flat iron but I’ve found the clipless curling iron a lot easier and faster. I like how the clipless curling iron creates soft beachy waves in my hair that hold very well too.

You can get the same waves using a regular curling iron just make sure the clamp is closed and wrap your hair OVER the clamp to get these waves. I’ve found the clipless curling iron has made my waves stay longer since it gets much hotter than the curling iron- so hot that I’ve had to ice my fingers from burning them. I also love that it helps eliminate unnecessary heat at the weakest part of your hair, the tips.

My clipless curling iron is Jose Eber, 25mm pro series. It comes with a heat resistant glove which I should have used at first since I burned my fingers many times. Once I got it down, I hardly ever burn myself.

1.Using a wide-tooth comb, comb through your hair and make sure to smooth out any tangles. This will make things a lot easier when it’s time to curl!

2. Pull the top layer of your hair back and twist in a bun. Secure with a hair clip or hair tie. Since my hair is thicker, I break this up in four sections and curl each layer separately.

3. Hold the iron with the barrel pointing down. Wrap a small section hair around the iron. Hold on to the tip of the hair as it heats for about 10 seconds or so.

4. Unwrap the section of hair and let your hair fall by itself. Repeat to curl the entire section the same way.

5. Let another section of your hair loose from your clip. Tie any remaining hair up again. Begin curling the new section the same way.

6. After you’re done curling all of your hair, use your fingers to brush out the waves gently.

7. Finish by spraying your waves with hair spray or curling mist.

 Ta-da!

New Trader Joe’s Finds

I forgot to mention in yesterday’s post how I hit up Trader Joe’s this past weekend and stocked up on some awesome treats.

A bowl of this with sliced bananas & unsweetened almond milk = breakfast happiness

Fantastic in my morning coffee

I didn’t buy this at TJ’s… but I started taking biotin a month ago and I wanted to share how much it’s helped my skin! I haven’t been breaking out nearly as much as I used to. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve cut out dairy from my diet, Kate Somerville products or the biotin, but my skin has cleared up dramatically.

For all you ladies & gents to suffer with adult acne (especially those painful underground ones) I highly recommend biotin. Of course, consult your doctor before taking biotin or any other vitamin you’re unsure about.

Hi everyone! It’s been forever since I did a beauty post. I use all of the items above on a daily basis. I woke up this morning and took Barre Brawl class, it was a great way to start my day and an awesome stress reliever. I’ve worked out 5 days this week and I have to admit I feel awesome and so do my clothes. Working out one day on the weekend makes such a difference, I’m serious! Now I can go about my day and go out on the town feeling energized. Hope you’re having a great weekend! xo

My Lifestyle Change Cont.

Happy Thursday! One more day until the weekend. I am so excited, my best friend Jess and her fiance Drew are coming in town for the weekend for their engagement party. I can’t wait to celebrate with them! As I mentioned in my previous post, I have completely changed my eating habits to get back on track with eating healthy and more importantly so my clothes fit me better.

Yesterday's lunch: Vegetable pot pie pocket sandwich

It was delicious and very filling. I will definitely be buying this again for future lunches.

Snack: 100 calorie popcorn. I've burnt it the past two times I've made it and stunk up my entire office. Everyone knew it was me so I hid under my desk so people couldn't find me! lol

Happy Things…

My new necklace from Bauble Bar (baublebar.com). You get $10 off your first purchase...love it!

I got my second no chip manicure at Ambra (ambrasalonandeuropeanspa.com) yesterday. I decided to go with a bright pink color for spring. It was a hard decision to make since my nails will be this color for the next two weeks. Every time I look at my nails I will think of the warm weather that is coming soon!

Who’s looking forward to warmer weather?

Coconut Oil for health and beauty

Hi everyone, happy Tuesday! I got a chemical peel last month and my estition told me about using coconut oil as an alternative for moisturizer. She also informed me of the health benefits of coconut oil and how you can use it for cooking, weight loss, and beauty. I was amazed and immediately went to whole foods to buy myself a jar of virgin organic coconut oil.

Since I love natural products I slather it on my skin, hair and lips. Coconut oil has long been known as a beauty secret in many parts of the world and is it is finally recovering its due respect here in the U.S.

Benefits & Uses of Coconut Oil:

  • Contains natural UV defense, and helps to slow down the aging process in the skin.
  • Spread it on your skin to make it super soft, with intense moisture and healing.
  • Apply it to your hair as a mask to heal dry, damaged hair, get rid of split ends and keep your hair softer and stronger. To use on hair, apply a small amount and leave on for about 30 minutes. Rinse or shampoo out.
  • Speeds up your metabolism, helping your body to burn more calories, thus contributing to weight loss. It also is known to heal thyroid disorders and help to regulate thyroid function, which in turn promotes weight loss.
  • Use it to remove eye makeup.
  • As a substitute for vegetable oil when baking.
  • Substitute coconut oil for olive oil when sautéing vegetables.

Why is Coconut Oil Solid?: Unlike most other oils, coconut oil has a high melting point – about 76-78 degrees. Therefore it is solid at room temperature and melts only when the temperatures go high. If you buy a bottle of coconut oil and find it solid, don’t think that there is some problem with it. Coconut oil is like this only. And of course, don’t keep it in your refrigerator.

Celebrity Fact: Model Miranda Kerr revealed her number one beauty secret as coconut oil.

Where you can find coconut oil:

  • your local health food store
  • whole foods
  • trader joe’s

When you’re shopping, make sure you purchase organic virgin coconut oil.
