Low Calorie Snacks: My Current Favorites

I’m always on the lookout for new products that come on the grocery stores shelves. Some of these snacks are new and some have made a comeback. When I become obsessed with a new snack I usually eat it everyday until I get sick of it, but if it’s something good I will eventually start buying it again. I’m the type of person that loves to snack. I always make sure I have a variety of healthy snacks available both sweet and salty. I almost always have some sort of bar in my purse at all times. Let me know if you have any questions about the products below!

Veggie Straws: I was introduced to these at my friends bachelorette party in June. Apparently I was late to the game because these bad boys have been around for a long time. With 130 calories per serving (serving size: 38 straws) you’re allowed to sit on your couch with the bag in hand. When I’m craving salt, veggie straws are my go-to. I literally feel like I’m eating potato chips without the guilt. You can find them in your grocery’s chip aisle.

Dole Banana Dippers: These make a great desert! They come in pre-portioned individually wrapped packages with 3 banana slices per pack equaling to 100 calories. J and I love to eat them with a glass of red wine after dinner.

Kind Bars: They now come in a variety of new and awesome flavors such as dark chocolate cinnamon pecan, maple glazed pecan & sea salt, and dark chocolate, nuts & sea salt. I eat them as my mid-day snack before I hit the gym to give me some energy. I’M NOT EVEN KIDDING when I say, they taste SO good that I feel like I’m eating a candy bar. They are also made from all-natural ingredients and super filling.

Vita Tops: I love these for breakfast with my coffee or as a mid-day snack. They are filled with tons of fiber to fill you up and taste AMAZING. I’ve been really into the golden corn and apple crumb flavors. Honestly, all of the flavors are awesome AND they are only 100 calories per muffin top!

Getting Back on Track

So it’s a new year, new beginnings, new goals. After stuffing my face during vacation, I am completely aware that I need to get back on track. I’m so sick of eating out- so, I’ve been doing a lot of cooking for myself and J and I already feel so much better! I also like to know whats in my food and how it’s made. Even if I tell the waitress at a restaurant to cook my omelet in pam who knows if that actually happens! Below I put together some meal ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks that are easy to make and perfect for during the work week.

Breakfast:

  • Overnight Oats
  • 1 whole grain cinnamon rasin english muffin with 1 tbsp of jam
  • 1 packet of instant oatmeal (I like to keep a box at my desk)
  • 2 whole grain kashi waffles with 1 tbsp of jam/spray butter/light syrup

Lunch:

This is the hardest meal for me, I have no clue why. I am so indecisive about what I want that it’s always a problem. Although I mention my restaurant go-to’s I’ve found that I’ve maintained my weight by bringing my own lunch.

  • Turkey sandwich in a wrap/sandwich thin/light whole grain bread. Avoid cheese and mayo and use mustard instead. I like to bring my own and purchase turkey from the market. If I’m eating out I make sure to eat my sandwich open face- always!
  • Soup– I love picking up vegetable from Au Bon Pan. They have 12 different kinds of soups and you can see the calorie content for all of them. I am not a fan of canned soup, I find it to be disgusting.
  • Chili– I just made a batch of Taco Chicken Chili. I stored the leftovers in portioned tupperware containers and bring it for lunch. Watch out for toppings such as cheese and sour cream, those add up!
  • Salad– I find salad to be the biggest pain the in butt to make at home. I love the Whole Foods salad bar. I create monster salads with tons of veggies. I’ve been enjoying Trader Joe’s kale salad, I feel so healthy when I eat it for lunch.I also like salads from Protein Bar too, the southwest salad is my favorite. Always order dressing on the side and stay away from creamy dressings which are a ton of calories.

Dinner:

  • Salad– see above
  • FishSalmon, Whitefish, Tilapia are my favorite fish to cook during the week.
  • Sushi– J and I order in sushi at least once a week. Stick with the rolls without tempura crunch, cream cheese, mayo, or sauce. Those all add extra calories. I also love go mai (boiled spinach with peanut sauce).

Snacks:

  • Mojo bars or Kind bars
  • Clementines (in season!)
  • Apple with 1 tbsp of almond butter
  • Pop Chips

Tips:

  • Always measure your portions. If you don’t have measuring tools handy, make your best guess. Items like peanut butter add up.
  • Do NOT starve yourself. This will lead to a binge later which will just upset you even more.
  • Wear a pair of pants that are a little snug on you- this will be a constant reminder to eat healthy.
  • To stop yourself from late night eating: paint your nails. You can’t stick your hand in a bag of chips with wet nails!
  • I have found that drinking green juice such as BluePrint’s Green Juice (kale, apple, ginger, romaine, spinach, cucumber, celery, parsley, and lemon) reduces my cravings. It’s sold at Whole Foods now!

Let me know if you have any questions about any of the meals/snacks/tips above. Hopefully this gives you some new ideas to help you get back on track this year.

Popchips “Partnerchip”

Special thanks to Potbelly for sending me this awesome gift bag with some fantastic goodies! I’ve always been a fan of Popchips, especially when they came out with their portion controlled packs that are one of my favorite snacks at the office. These crunchy never baked, never fried potato chips make you feel like your eating the real deal without the guilt. Some of the flavors include  BBQ, sea salt, sweet potato, and parmesan & garlic- just to name a few!

They also included a free sandwich from Potbelly AND  a free cookie. YUM! Popchips recently partnered up with Potbelly. Potbelly + Popchips = FANTASTIC “Partnerchip”!

I’ve been loving Potbelly’s new mediterranean sandwich (hummus, feta, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, and cucumber) on skinny wheat bread. Obviously I had to have my BBQ popchips on the side. This made a perfect and low calorie lunch.

Be on the lookout for Popchips at your nearest Potbelly store. They are the perfect compliment to any Potbelly sandwich!

Have a great day!

My Lifestyle Change Cont.

Happy Thursday! One more day until the weekend. I am so excited, my best friend Jess and her fiance Drew are coming in town for the weekend for their engagement party. I can’t wait to celebrate with them! As I mentioned in my previous post, I have completely changed my eating habits to get back on track with eating healthy and more importantly so my clothes fit me better.

Yesterday's lunch: Vegetable pot pie pocket sandwich

It was delicious and very filling. I will definitely be buying this again for future lunches.

Snack: 100 calorie popcorn. I've burnt it the past two times I've made it and stunk up my entire office. Everyone knew it was me so I hid under my desk so people couldn't find me! lol

Happy Things…

My new necklace from Bauble Bar (baublebar.com). You get $10 off your first purchase...love it!

I got my second no chip manicure at Ambra (ambrasalonandeuropeanspa.com) yesterday. I decided to go with a bright pink color for spring. It was a hard decision to make since my nails will be this color for the next two weeks. Every time I look at my nails I will think of the warm weather that is coming soon!

Who’s looking forward to warmer weather?

Homemade Spicy Kale Chips

When it comes to sweet vs salty, I am definitely a sweet person. Chocolate is my biggest weakness. Lately, when I’m craving a salty snack I always want to grab a bag of chips which is the not best choice for a salty treat except for pop chips of course!
There has been so much hype about kale and how good it is for you. Last week, I ventured to Trader Joe’s and found pre washed chopped kale, which is one of their newest items! I used the pre chopped kale to make kale chips…which turned out delicious! I prepared the kale with some olive oil and seasonings and tossed it together with my best kitchen tool, my hands! …and baked them in a 400 degree oven for 15-17 minutes this photo doesn’t even do them justice My kale chips turned out awesome. They were crispy, crunchy, and had a hint of spice.
I ate the entire tray in one sitting. No joke.
Homemade Spicy Kale Chips
Ingredients:1 bag of pre washed kale1 tbsp of light olive oil1 tsp of salt1 tsp of pepper1 tsp of cayenne pepper1 pinch of red pepper flakes
Directions:Coat the kale with 1 tbsp of olive oil and mix well. TIP: 1 tbsp doesn’t seem like enough but if you add too much olive oil the chips will become soggy. Add the salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, and red pepper flakes to the kale and olive oil and mix well with your hands so all the kale is evenly coated. Spread the kale on a baking sheet lined with foil. Make sure the kale is spread evenly.
Bake for 15-17 minutes at 400 degrees until the kale is browned and crisp. If you want you chips super crispy, flip them over in the middle of baking (after 7 minutes or so)
These chips are extremely easy to make, full of flavor, and very filling. You are also getting in your vegetable servings while enjoying something that is nutritionally good for you!
Have a great day!

Enjoy your vacay without getting fat

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I am currently blogging from 10,000 feet in the air on my way to Florida with my family.
Wi-fi on the plane is ah-mazing!  3 thumbs up
Since I’m going to be in a bikini and mini dresses most of the time, I made a master plan on how to enjoy vacation without coming home and feeling like a fat tub of lard. Most of the time we think vacation equals “I can pig out.”

Sure, you can pig out but you also need to be mindful of the choices you make, it’s easier than you think!

The day of…
Airport food sucks. If you want to eat healthy try sticking with something simple like a turkey sandwich or salad. When it comes to airport or airplane food, the simpler the better. Don’t even think about getting in the line at McDonalds…vacay hasn’t started yet.

FYI skip the “healthy” airport kiosks Most of the time you are not getting fresh, quality foods and paying a hefty price for it. gross veggie sandwich from an airport kiosk that I threw in the garbage
Always have snacks on hand. Bring granola bars, almonds, dried fruit, or pop chips.
Side note: Jan had to bake homemade hamentashen and bring it with us to Florida. Thanks Mom, just what I need when I’m getting in a bikini.

While you’re on Vacay:

Pace yourself. How do you pass up nutella and banana crepes in Paris? YOU DON’T. Just pace yourself and try not to get out of control.

Hide the mini bar key.  Do you really want to splurge on over priced chips and m&m’s? Save your calories for something that’s worth it!

Walk. On the beach, while shopping, opt for the walking tour, etc. Not only will you be able to see more of the city your traveling in, you will burn calories. Duh

Eat Regularly. We all love sleeping in while on vacation and running around seeing sites. Don’t skip meals, you will find yourself STARVING later on and pigging out on something you will regret.

Peace out Chi Town
We really need a tan

Beat the late night munchies

Oh dear… let’s not even go there
Did you know that most of the time you think you are hungry, you’re actually just bored?  think before you munch
Tips to avoid late night munchies…

  • Eat a balanced, satisfying dinner.
  • Brush your teeth and use a strong minty mouthwash.
  • Online shop- I highly recommend checking out Victoria’s Secret’s 2011 summer swim line. You’re not going to munch when you see the hot VS models.
  • Start using crest white strips– the kind where you need to leave them in for at least an hour.
  • Paint your nails two coats. You won’t be able to stick your hands into a bag of chips with wet nails.
  • Clean- you will burn calories too!
  • Drink water, crystal light lemonade, or decaf green tea.
  • Get into your bed and don’t leave!
  • Start a secret stash.

Most importantly it’s all about will power the chips are not forcing you to eat them
Why you should stop munching at the wee hours of the night…

  • You will feel better about yourself
  • You may lose weight
  • You will wake up feeling ah-mazing!
  • You will realize YOU CAN DO IT!

Summer is almost here…don’t you want to look hot?
Just sayin’
